Focus on ... FIG
The fig is the emblem of the Mediterranean basin where it has been cultivated for millennia. To be precise, the fig is a false fruit in the botanical sense of the term… and her life is fascinating… let me tell you… straddling a course in botany and entomology…
A little culture ... (which requires a little concentration)
It is in fact a fleshy receptacle, the sycone, which encloses hundreds, sometimes several thousand, tiny unisexual flowers and, when ripe, an infructescence of achenes (innumerable small grains that dot the flesh of the fig) scattered around in an edible pulp ...
Ecologists are fascinated by the mutualistic relationship that exists between the fig tree and its unique pollinator, the blastophage. This tiny insect related to bees and wasps needs the fig tree, more precisely the fig, to multiply. In turn, the fig tree needs the blastophagus for its pollination. For the system to work, each of the two must accept a compromise. Some fig trees must be sacrificed to serve as nurseries for the blastophagus and will never be able to produce seeds. As for the insect, it must accept that a certain percentage of females die during pollination without being able to lay their eggs, which constitutes a loss for the future generation. The nursery figs which serve as habitat for the blastophagus and which are parasitized by it, are inedible. The others, called "nurseries", are edible. Since both grow on different trees, it was long believed that they were two different botanical species, which is not the case.
Une pretty little old ... Not less than 700 varieties figs are found in the world. The fig is considered at present as oldest domesticated fruit… 1 years before wheat, barley and legumes. A proverb says that " for a fig to be good, it must have a poor habit (grayish and wrinkled film), a drunkard's eye (wet, with a droplet beading on the ostiole) and a devout neck (hanging over the peduncle) ”.
... full of riches No, the fig is not not so caloric as we tend to believe: fresh, it provides 57 kcal / 100 g, or as much as an apple or a plum. Knowing that an average fruit (45 g) provides only 25 kcal, it would be wrong to go without. Be careful, the dried fig is much more caloric: 250 kcal / 100 g, which is why it is one of the snacks of athletes and hikers.
Rich in vitamin B3 and fiber, the fig favors the intestinal transit. It is also rich in calcium, dietary iron and potassium. In Chinese medicine, its active substance, ficin, is used to eliminate toxins and treat boils. And in herbalism, it is used in preparation for treat colds and clear the airways.
Definitely, what a story, what intense life and what richness… to be tasted… without moderation!
